IN A NUTSHELL: MUST READ

#pnut4prez: Who Is Afraid Of Megyn Kelly? Republican front-runner Donald Trump (still feels weird saying that) is making headlines yet again. What started off as a small spat between Donald and Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly escalated into a massive row with Trump deciding he won’t attend tonight’s final debate before the Iowa caucus (in four days). Fox News (an unlikely champion for journalism) accused Trump of “terrorizing” Kelly, and Ted Cruz called him “Donald Duck.”

Trump, like a schoolyard bully citing unrelated reasons to avoid a fight he fears, explained his reasoning for skipping the debate. In his statement he rambled on about his book the “Art of the Deal,” his billions of dollars of wealth and said he knew when to walk away from a “bad deal.” He never mentions Kelly by name. Meanwhile, you can bet Jeb Bush $20 if Trump will show up tonight.

Facebook Continues To Swallow Up Our Advertising Dollars
Facebook announced stellar fourth quarter results, more than doubling net profit from a previous year, to $1.56 billion. ~80% of their advertising revenue now comes from mobile advertising making it incredibly important for the company to ensure it delivers relevant and effective ads on such small screens. Meanwhile, they continue to roll out new products like Oculus VR.

Zuck’s toughest decision right now is what to wear to work on his first day back from paternity leave (he was gone for most of last quarter).

NUTS AND BOLTS: SHOULD READ

Europe: Terrorism And Citizenship Prove To Be Confusing Concepts French Justice Minster Christiane Taubira resigned yesterday over a row between her and President Francois Hollande over a new law that threatens to strip terror suspects of citizenship. Revoking citizenship has a controversial history in Europe as it was first applied en masse by fascist regimes during the 1930’s. Hollande has also asked to indefinitely extend the State of Emergency in France until ISIS is “totally defeated”… or until he loses office.

Federal Reserve: No, We Aren’t Giving Out Free Money Again, Go AwayInvestors were disappointed as the Fed didn’t rule out a March rate rise. The Fed acknowledged that things were a little bit choppy outside the US but said that they still expected to raise rates in 2015 (the US economy is doing well). Meanwhile, the Dow fell 1.4% and Apple had its worst day in two years, losing 6.5%.

NEW BOOK: The Only Game in Town: Central Banks, Instability, and Avoiding the Next Collapse By Mohamed el-Erian

Keeping Our Eye On…

  • Cover Up: Germany and Russia exchanged angry words over an alleged rape case involving a Russian minor at the hands of migrant men in Germany. Russia’s Foreign Minister infuriated the Germans by alluding to a cover up by the German government.
  • Zika: With a vaccine for the virus years away the US is trying to figure out exactly what to do to deal with it. Here are a few ideas from Vox.
  • Gay Rights: Two Chinese men are going to court in the first-of-its-kind case in China to sue for the right to marry. The case brings the rights of same-sex couples to the fore in the world’s largest country.

LOOSE NUTS: FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT

Hola Mr. Prime Minster, Is Your Refrigerator Running?  Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy fell for a prank call from two radio hosts pretending to be Carles Puigdemont, the separatist leader of Catalonia (where Barcelona is). Rajoy, who is struggling to cling to power, had a surprisingly free schedule when the pranksters asked for a meeting. In the end Rajoy was disappointed but took the joke in stride, unlike Fidel Castro who lost his s**t during a prank call a few years back.

Mike Huckabee, pork chops and a terrible, terrible Adele cover.
