National parliaments in Europe are so fractured they make the Republican Party look like a symbol of peaceful cohesion. We take a quick and funny look at a really boring problem.

IN A NUTSHELL: MUST READ

Trump Rally Violence Sends US Election Into Dangerous Phase The campaign trail took on a “third-world feel” on Friday as violence broke out at a Trump rally in Chicago. Minutes before Trump was to take the podium, his campaign cancelled the event and scuffles immediately ensued between protestors and Trump supporters.

A number of protestors were students at University of Illinois at Chicago hoping to send a non-violent message to the Trump campaign. The police say there was no real threat and that the cancellation announcement riled up the crowd. Other protesters not affiliated with the school were provoked by racial taunts from Trump supporters and fighting began. Trump blamed Bernie Sanders for the violence. The rest of the world (including other Republicans) blame Trump.

Suspected Car Bomb In Turkey Kills At Least 25 PeopleTurkish officials are reporting at least 25 killed and over 75 people injured in an alleged car bomb in Ankara. The explosion in the Kizilay district was close to government buildings and crowded bus stops, resulting in multiple vehicles on fire. While investigations are underway, officials have evacuated the area in case of more violence. The bombing — which is the third attack on the Turkish capital in less than six months — comes just two days after the US Embassy issued a security warning about a potential plot to attack Turkish government buildings.

NUTS AND BOLTS: SHOULD READ

Gunmen Open Fire At Ivory Coast ResortAt least 12 people were killed after a gunmen opened fire near hotels in Ivory Coast. Two to four attackers allegedly took guests and resort staff members hostage in Grand-Bassam, a popular seaside town just 25 miles from Abidjan. While Reuters is reporting at least a dozen dead, witnesses claim many more have been injured in the attacks. The shooters have not yet been identified, but special forces have arrived in Grand-Bassam to evacuate the area.

Lebanon Tries To Get Its ‘Shit’ Together Beirut’s “You Stink” movement reemerged this week to protest the government’s failure to create a lasting solution to the garbage crisis. The Lebanese government announced a new plan on Saturday to reopen landfills as a temporary solution. Over 2,000 protestors responded in Beirut, rejecting the option of temporary landfills and demanding a long term waste-disposal program. Information Minister Ramzi Jreij said the temporary landfills will last four years, which should hopefully give the government enough time to get its shit together and figure out a real plan (don’t bet on it).

Scotland Might Take Another Crack At ReferendumThe Scots are not a people to be deterred when it comes to fighting for their independence (see: Braveheart). While the British Government no doubt breathed a sigh of relief in 2014 when a push for independence was defeated 55-45% in a referendum, it seems that the Scottish National Party was unconvinced. Emboldened by Britain’s own “independence from the EU” referendum (Brexit), the Scots want to give it another shot (ha! didn’t see that one coming, Cameron!).

Keeping Our Eye On…

  • DPRK: The North Korean submarine that went missing is now presumed to be sunk. The country’s aging fleet of submarines are diesel-powered and only thought to be good for coastal defense. Sources are blaming the loss on a maintenance problem.
  • SXSW: Fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad will be the first US Olympian to wear a hijab, but she didn’t exactly get a warm welcome in Austin. The festival has apologized for asking the 2016 Olympian to remove her hijab.
  • AI: There is still some hope left for humans! Go grandmaster Lee Sedol won his first game against AlphaGo, Google’s artificially intelligent computing system. But the AI system had already won three consecutive games in this week’s historic match.

Emergency Biscuits Flown Into UK Due To National Shortage The biscuit shortage in South Yorkshire finally got the relief it so desperately needed. After a flood in Cumbria forced United Biscuits to close its Carlisle factory, fans of the beloved McVitie’s, Jacob’s and Crawford’s were at a loss for snacks. Luckily, salvation came in the form of two Boeing 777 aircrafts filled with emergency biscuits to manage the country’s cravings until the factory is up and running again.
