 IN A NUTSHELL: MUST READ

The GOP And Fox News Deal With Some Abandonment Issues

It looks like Megyn Kelly had the best New Year’s resolution of 2017. The controversial journalist on Fox News is leaving the network to join NBC News, where she will host her own daytime news program, anchor an in-depth Sunday night show and take part some of NBC’s other big-event coverage. Fox News is still reeling from the departure of Roger Ailes, Fox’s founding chairman, after several women accused him of sexual harassment. Kelly’s farewell will no doubt cause more stress as they try to replace their most-watched host after Bill O’Reilly.

Meanwhile on Capitol Hill, the Republican-led Congress had a rough start to its first session of the year. The GOP lawmakers’ surprise vote to strip the Office of Congressional Ethics of its independence caused so much national outrage, they had to ditch the plan. The secret move, initiated by Republican Congressman Bob Goodlatte, would have prevented the Office of Congressional Ethics from investigating political misconduct independently. It was such a bad idea that even fellow Republican and President-elect Donald Trump took to social media to criticize the decision. Just a few hours after Trump’s tweet, the legislative effort was reversed in an emergency meeting.

Istanbul Is Still Searching For The Nightclub Gunman

Turkish authorities arrested two more people in connection with the attack on New Year’s Eve that killed 39 people. This brings the total number of suspects to 16 currently in custody, but the suspected gunman remains at large. The attacker opened fire with an automatic rifle inside the Reina nightclub, an act that was claimed by ISIS. The militant group said that Reina was where Christians met up to celebrate an “apostate holiday” and said the attack was revenge for Turkey’s involvement in Syria.

Turkish parliament also voted to extend emergency rule by another three months in the wake of this violence. Emergency rule was first introduced after the failed coup attempt last July and enables the government to bypass parliament in enacting laws. It also allows the government to suspend certain rights “when deemed necessary.”

Germany Reprinted Hitler’s ‘Mein Kampf’ And It Flew Off Bookshelves

Last year, Germany published a reprint of Adolf Hitler’s anti-Semitic manifesto Mein Kampf for the first time since World War II. Naturally, given the horrific rise of neo-Nazi ideologies in Europe least year, 85,000 copies of the book were quickly sold. The media is calling it a “surprise bestseller” but nobody reading the news is all that surprised. The Institute of Contemporary History of Munich (IfZ) published an annotated version of Hitler’s infamous ranting, hoping the reprint would educate people on the rise of authoritarian political views. While it’s clear the publisher wasn’t trying to promote a far-right ideology, renewed access to the once-banned book is bound to reveal a few fans. Mein Kampf is now heading for its sixth print run in Germany.

Finland Adds New Meaning To The Term ‘Funemployment’

Finland is giving universal basic income a test run and will now pay its unemployed citizens an unconditional monthly sum. For the next two years, Finns between the ages of 25 to 58 will receive €560, which will hopefully cut poverty and even the country’s 8.1% unemployment rate. This social experiment looks like a college student’s dream gap-year. Kela, Finland’s social security provider, said the guaranteed monthly income will continue even if its recipients find work. In other news, Daily Pnut will consider moving our offices to Helsinki.

 KEEPING OUR EYE ON: PRISONERS

Philippines: More than 130 inmates escaped the North Cotabato district jail after suspected Muslim rebels attacked the prison. At least one guard and one inmate died in what has become the largest jailbreak in years.

Charles Manson: The infamous cult leader and mass murderer is believed to be seriously ill. Manson, who is 82 years and serving a life sentence, was taken from his California prison to a nearby hospital for an undisclosed medical issue.

Fugitive Finds Time For A Selfie While Escaping Jail

Pro Tip: If you break out of prison, don’t announce it on Facebook. Brayan Bremer, a Brazilian man who broke out of a Manaus prison on Sunday, found time from his busy schedule of running from the law to post pictures of himself and another fugitive on Facebook. The humble brag even included the caption “On the run from jail” to make sure everyone on the internet knew how much fun he was having. Bremer was among 72 prisoners to escape from Antonio Trindade prison, 40 of whom were quickly recaptured, including the other man in Bremer’s selfie. Bremer is still on the loose, though, which might be why he still looks happy in his Facebook update.
